Today Cowon has released a firmware upgrade for the Cowon S9 Media Centre, Softsaurus gives you a hands-on to what you may expect, it has a lot of fancy new features so hang on to your shorts.

First off I have to say I really fell in love with my Cowon S9, It's so versatile and easy to use. It supports almost anything you throw at it without having to convert every single file. Most importantly however is the fact that they offer support for lots of Open Source codecs such as OGG and FLAC which are both very efficient, great lossless encoders. Your audio will never sound crappy ever again.

The great thing about new hardware is that it's software is often frequently updated, once it's passed the first year of it's release these updates become less and less frequent and you are eventually left with none. The Korean company Cowon however stays true to it's users and keeps the updates flowing again and again and again, you gotta love this company!

Today Cowon released a Beta (which contains no bugs I could replicate) of their new S9 firmware V2.30, and it's really worth the upgrade. They've added a lot of new features but probably the two most important and noticeable are the new Matrix browsing mode and the shake feature.

The Matrix browsing mode allows you to flip your S9 to landscape and browse through all of the album covers at once, this is much more efficient and flows a lot better that the previous default where it would just show you all tracks of the current playing album, this was very confusing for they all have the same album cover. The Matrix feature is such a welcome feature, at least to me it is.

The Shake feature kind of speaks for itself, you can now shake your cowon to the left or right to go to a previous or next track. This feature however cannot be enabled at the same time as the Matrix browsing mode for these are both controlled by the same G meter. It does lack consistency for this shake feature has not been added to the Image viewer, but this may be added later on perhaps.

At least for now I am quite happy with this latest firmware, it does a great job at making the browsing process easier and more efficient. Besides the main new features there is now a game added to the utilities that uses the G meter to guide an avatar through a field with "ants?" not such a big deal but fun none the less.

The complete featurelist as listed by Cowon can be found at their website.

Thanks a lot Cowon!
