Mozilla has scetched it's plans for Firefox 4 in a draft-document. The browser will go by codename Namoraoka and should provide improved performance, task based tabmanagement and an improved support for webapps.

After the release of Firefox 3.5, codenamed Shiretoko, the developmentteam thinks it can focus all attention to the next major release. During the early developing stages the browser will go by version number 3.6 but the final release shall go by the name of Firefox 4. Mozilla already wrote a draftversion of the Firefox 4 landmarks document which concirns a release in early 2010.

The primary goal is of course to improve the performance of Firefox. The launchtime should be reduced and opening a new tab should be more fluid. The development of the Gecko 1.9.2 render engine which will also be done early 2010 should contribute to reach this landmark.

On the side the developmentteam wants to focus on the possibility to personalize the browser and adding new functionality via add-ons. After installing 'lightweight' themes and add-ons Firefox should no longer require a reboot. Also the draft contains and idea for a 'personal portal' which can be summoned with the command 'about:me' and there should be a tool which can automatically fill in forms.

The button 'task based navigation' will provide the user with a number of features to save and restore tabgroups. Also the filemanagement in the downloadmanager will have to face the knife. Namoroka will also debute Taskfox, an improved upon version of the textcommand based version of Ubiquity.

Last but not least Namaroka should handle webapps better making Firefox the ultimate intermediair between webapps and the Operating Systems running it. This also means the user interface while uploading should become much more clear and familliar. Besides that the user should be able to save a loaded webpage as a seperate webapp and the user should be presented with more features for editing data on webpages. Firefox 4 on OSX should offer support for the built-in proofing tools, the keychain-passwordmanager and Applescript.
Also Mozilla want to improve the look and feel within Windows which means the development of a new standard appearance that matches the Aero Glass-interface.
