Few developers feel the need to port their GPS software to Symbian or Palms new WebOS. Software developer Skyhook made this conclusion according to their own research. Android and iPhone OS however are very popular.
Skyhook Wireless asked hundreds of developers of LBS applications - programs that use a-gps or location via a phone masts - what platforms they would like to port their application for. Only eight percent of those surveyed said his software would launch for WebOS the new operating system by Palm and no more than nine percent showed interest in Symbian.
The distaste for Symbian is not illogical: the end of the S60 operating system seems in sight, with Symbian^2, the open source version of the system coming soon it seems likely that developers want to wait and see whether the Palm Pré, the first unit with WebOS, will be a success before they make their applications suited for the OS.
The most popular platforms show iPhone OS and Android. These two mobile Operating Systems were already the most popular for downloading applications by consumers. Hundreds of millions applications From Apple's App Store have been downloaded, while U.S. owners of the T-Mobile Android phone G1 average forty applications on their phones up.
