Google CEO Eric Schmidt, predicts that 2009 will see the breakthrough of phones with the Android operating system on board. The OS was developed by Google and is now in the hands of the Open Handset Alliance.

Meanwhile, the number of mobile phones with Android operating system as yet at all, a disappointing census for the Linux kernel-based platform. One of the few if not the only good available Android device, the G1 manufactured by HTC, but that is to change soon. Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google, even expects 2009 to be a booming year for Android. Schmidt shared his positive assessment with investors during a presentation of quarterly figures from Google.
The Google chief executive confirmed that the amount of Android phones to appear will be significant, and the company would also have signed agreements with providers. According to Schmidt the use of Android will not be limited to mobile phones, manufacturers would spontaneously pre-install Android on netbooks. The predictions of Schmidt do not just seem to be wishful thinking and empty promises to shareholders: several major phone manufacturers will come up with an Android based phone this year, amongst them are Samsung, Motorola, LG and HTC.
Also Sony Ericsson is working on an Android handset and will possibly announce it along with two other phones in May. The Sony Ericsson CEO Hideki Komiyama confirmed by the publication of the quarterly figures for his company to an Android device worked, but could not say when the phone would appear on the market. Komiyama said that the testing and evaluation of an Android based phone will still take "some time" having said that a May release seems unlikely.
