Software is like sex, it's better when it's free - Linus Torvalds

It appears The Sims 3 has been leaked, the game that has been in development for about five years appeared on many torrent portals and appears to work just fine. I went ahead and took the leaked version a test ride.

Although I doubt this version is a retail version (due to the lack of any security at all) it seems to perform quite well on my configuration which consists of the following:
- Intel core2 quad (clocked at 2.4GhZ per core)
- 4GB 800 MHz DDR2 Ram
- Nvidia Gforce 9600GT 512MB
The graphics per se are not so obviously upgraded compared to its predecessor, although it does look nice and sharp when run in high quality configuration.
Be warned thoug, there have been some stories of people losing their video card through overheating during the gameplay of The Sims 3. I have noticed a severe increase in the fan speed of the Nvidia card but it manages to cool the card down to a reasonable temperature, though long sessions often cumulatively amp up the thermometer, so I've noticed.
Gameplay wise this edition has few new features to offer, and it actually makes you wonder where all these years of development have went, could it be this third Sims actually uninstalls without leaving tons of clutter scattered around your filesystem? Maybe, but since this is just a small preview I'm not ready to uninstall this one yet so we'll just have to cross our fingers on that one.
Don't get me wrong, The Sims 3 appears to be another fun filled adventure for those that adore the Sims brand and it does offer some new functionality, like the ability to browse the neighborhood in real-time and tons of new configuration options in the Sim creator. But the thing I have with games like The Sims is just that it could have been so much more if the publishers were willing to risk some innovation. But you know what they say right... Never change a winning team.
